Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get a dental cleaning?

Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning every six months. If you have gum disease or a higher risk of buildup, your hygienist may recommend more frequent visits. Some patients are seen every 3-4months. Also some benefits cover your cleanings 3-4 times a year!

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

Most cleanings are comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let your hygienist know and they will adjust to keep you comfortable throughout. Nowadays, we have different gels and solutions to reduce gums and teeth sensitivity during cleanings.

What is the difference between a cleaning and a dental exam?

A cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains, while a dental exam checks your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. They are separate services, and they are often booked together.

How long does a dental cleaning take?

A routine cleaning usually takes about 45-60 minutes, depending on how much buildup is present and the health of your gums. At each cleaning the hygienist will measure your gums to see if there's any active inflammation present. The findings guide the length and the frequency of the cleanings for each patient.

Is a dental cleaning covered by CDCP?

Only 60min of cleaning per year is covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan. This of course to cover the bare basics. Most patient have to pay out of pocket for other cleanings they get that year. Reminder, the government or the insurance company creates general rules for them not guided by the individual care each patient needs.
